For the best wilderness feeling, the long paddler starts in Upper Mångsälven. From Grythyttan where the rivers join you paddle The  Northern Svartälven upstream. It works very well as the water in Svartälven move slow

NORTHERN SVARTÄLVEN

Svartälven translated to English is The Black River. The name is suitable due to the rivers dark water. Svartälven flows through a landscape with hills and forest. The feeling of wilderness is broken only sometime by some cottages or villages

 

  Trail description: river and lake paddling

Degree of difficulty: easy

From - to: Tyfors (11 km north of Gustavsström) - Grythyttan

 Distance: 68 km, 70% river paddling

 Drop: 34 m total, 60 cm/km on average

  Portages: 4 portages 100 m - 900 m

Landscape description: wilderness

The rain and wind shelters have firm fire places, dry toilets and sometimes even fire wood

The canoe trail continues to Southern Svartälven via a portage on 600 m or to Mångsälven/Östra leden via a portage on 400 m

PADDLE PACKAGE FOR PADDLERS FLYING IN TO STOCKHOLM ARLANDA AND STOCKHOLM VÄSTERÅS

 

 From Stockholm Arlanda airport you catch the 30 minutes train to the main train station in Stockholm. From there a straight 2,5 hour train ride takes you to the small town Ludvika. Alternatively you fly in to Stockholm Västerås and catch the same straight train to Ludvika (1,5 hours ride). We meet you at the train station in Ludvika and transfer you (with a stop at the supermarket) to Tyfors (the starting point of the canoe trail Svartälven). Along the canoe trail you will find organized free campsites

From Stockholm Skavsta airport you catch the 2,5 hours airport bus to the train station in Örebro (link). From there you catch the straight 1 hour train to the small town Kopparberg. Alternatively you are coming by train from the European continent. We meet you at the train station in Kopparberg and transfer you (with a stop at the supermarket) to the starting point of the canoe trail Svartälven. Lower Mångsälven offers pure lake paddling along the long and narrow lake Sör-Älgen (The South Moose). The canoe trail flows out in Svartälven and is to recommend for paddlers who desire to extend their paddle excursion in Mid Svartälven

Distance: 55 km, river paddling 30%

Paddle any of the province 20 canoe trails and get the canoes transported to the starting point and picked up from the finishing point without extra cost. Included are life jackets, paddles, canoe trolleys, trail information, waterproof phone cases and if the logistic allow a free ride of the driver back to the car at the starting point. For groups - free transport of hired equipment. Tour leader/Guide: 400 kr/40 euro hour/group 

  Canoes and transport are to be booked from the break-up of the ice to freeze-up (approximately April - November)

Trackless excursions

The paddler is a guest in the nature and is required to show responsibility and care. Not to harm and not to destroy. To be in the Swedish nature is a right but it is also a duty to behave well. The paddlers only track should be the whirlpool from the paddles
